SEPT is an international organization consisting of academics, consultants, practitioners, and national industry trade associations. Our mission is simple:

  • Perpetuate the triennial international conferences on concrete block paving
  • Maintain a database of papers from the international conferences

A WORLD OF SMALL ELEMENT, SEGMENTAL PAVING

Segmental paving is as old as human civilization. Since its genesis in the mid‑twentieth century, segmental concrete pavement developed as a unique, engineered and well-established technology.

The family of segmental concrete pavement includes those constructed with:

Interlocking concrete blocks (concrete pavers)

Permeable interlocking concrete blocks (permeable pavers)

Paving slabs (flags)

Planks

Grids

Most of these are manufactured using zero-slump (dry-cast) concrete on high production equipment as well using wet-cast methods. The pavement structures under these products vary with each application.

SEPT plays a coordinating role by encouraging forums for advancing this technology on a worldwide basis, principally through major international conferences hosted by national industry organizations and sponsors.

SEPT encourages dissemination of research and best practices in design, construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, national standards and codes, and environmental and social sustainability, through its Technical Paper database resource.

SEPT includes all forms of small element concrete pavement technology for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. This is evidenced by estimated 700+ million square meters placed each year on the planet. Applications range from residential patios, plazas, and parks to urban streets, port container terminals, and airports.

As a result, this website presents an important resource for a wide range of professionals including researchers, engineers, urban designers, municipal authorities, developers and contractors. SEPT also acts as a portal to a growing number of national associations’ websites which provide more local and experience-based design, construction, and maintenance guidance.
